Il-kittieb Karsten Xuereb, li għadu kemm rebaħ konkors internazzjonali tal-kitba marbut ma’ proġett ko-finanzjat mill-Unjoni Ewropea; l-iskultur Savio Deguara; u Teatru Marta Kwitt se jkunu Sarajevo fit-tielet ġimgħa ta’ Lulju biex jieħdu sehem f’dan l-avveniment artistiku importanti li jiġbor flimkien aktar minn 500 artist u artista mill-Ewropa u mill-Mediterran. Il-grupp Malti se jkun immexxi mill-attriċi u d-direttriċi tal-palk, Marcelle Teuma, li hija waħda mill-koordinaturi ewlenin ta’ Inizjamed u ilha għal dawn l-aħħar sena u nofs tħejji t-triq għas-sehem tal-Maltin f’Sarajevo 2001. Din it-tħejjija kienet tinkludi s-sehem tagħha f’laqgħat organizzattivi li saru f’Barċellona f’Ġunju tas-sena 2000 u f’Ruma f’April li għadda. Reċentement kien hawn ukoll Malta Flavio Mongelli, li huwa figura ewlenija fl-organizzazzjoni tal-bjennali. F’Sarajevo, Marcelle Teuma se tieħu sehem fil-laqgħat li se jkun hemm ta’ l-għaqda internazzjonali li tmexxi l-bjennali. Inizjamed hija membru f’din l-għaqda internazzjonali u jidher li hemm proposta li l-Maltin jingħataw sehem fil-kumitat tat-tmexxija ta’ din l-għaqda internazzjonali.

Bħala parti mit-tħejjijiet għall-bjennali ta’ Sarajevo, il-perit Adrian Mifsud, li huwa wkoll wieħed mill-ħames koordinaturi ewlenin ta’ Inizjamed, ħa sehem f’workshop ta’ ħmistax ta’ l-arkitettura li fih saru għadd ta’ disinji u pjanijiet marbutin mal-bjennali u mal-miġja ta’ mijiet ta’ artisti. Is-sehem ta’ Adrian Mifsud f’dan il-workshop kienet possibbli bil-għajnuna ta’ l-organizzazzjoni kulturali Taljana ta’ l-ARCI li għandha rabtiet kbar ma’ Inizjamed.

L-ewwel darba li Inizjamed ħadet sehem f’din il-bjennali kienet sentejn ilu f’Ruma. F’dik l-okkażjoni kienu ħadu sehem l-artist Għawdxi Austin Camilleri u l-grupp teatrali XXX Theatre Group magħmul minn Ray Calleja u Clare Agius li kienu ppreżentaw produzzjoni oriġinali bl-isem ta’ “Riħ”. Il-grupp kien tmexxa minn Adrian Grima, il-koordinatur ta’ Inizjamed, li kien ippreżenta diskors dwar il-kultura Maltija bejn l-Ewropa u l-Mediterran fil-konferenza marbuta mal-bjennali.

Din is-sena, il-grupp teatrali Marta Kwitt se jippreżenta xogħol teatrali oriġinali bl-isem ta’ “Bakki”. Dan ix-xogħol se jippreżentawh għall-ewwel darba fil-pubbliku kuljum fid-9.00pm bejn id-9 u l-15 ta’ Lulju fil-post tagħhom li jismu “Action Base” ġewwa n-Naxxar.

Savio Deguara, li studja l-iskultura f' Malta, Perugia u Barċellona, se jippreżenta installazzjoni mnebbħa mit-tema tal-kaos u l-komunikazzjoni u mill-istorja riċenti ta’ Sarajevo.

Karsten Xuereb, li kkoordina x-xogħol fuq il-produzzjoni ta’ Inizjamed Kitbiet mill-Mediterran li ttellgħet fl-Universitŕ f’Awwissu ta’ l-2000 u ħadem dokumentarju dwar Marjanu Vella u l-gawwi fi ħdan il-proġett ta’ Inizjamed “Sħaba Gawwi”, se jippreżenta xogħol letterarju bl-isem ta’ “Between toes and heels: a short tale about (the need for) chaos in communication”.

Kif jaslu Malta, Marcelle Teuma u Karsten Xuereb se jieħdu sehem f’inizjattiva oħra importanti ta’ Inizjamed b’kollaborazzjoni mal-British Council: il-miġja f’Malta tal-kittieb żagħżugħ Skoċċiż Kevin MacNeil li se jagħmel sensiela ta’ workshops ta’ kitba kreattiva, u se jieħu sehem f’laqgħa pubblika dwar l-identitŕ kulturali li se ssir fit-teatru ta’ Bay Street u f’rappreżentazzjoni letterarja bl-isem ta' "Gżejjer" li se ssir l-Universitŕ.

  Maltese Artists for Sarajevo 2001

A group of young Maltese artists will be representing the Mediterranean cultural organization Inizjamed at the X edition of the Biennial for Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean which will be held in Sarajevo in the last two weeks of July.

Writer Karsten Xuereb, who recently won first prize in an international writing competition tied to a Culture 2000 project co-financed by the EU; sculptor Savio Deguara (in picture); and Teatru Marta Kwitt, will be in Sarajevo in the third week of July to take part in this major artist event that will bring together some 500 artists from all over Europe and the Mediterranean. This year’s theme is “Chaos and Communication”.

The Maltese group will be lead by actress and theatre director, Marcelle Teuma who is one of the main coordinators of Inizjamed. She has been preparing for Inizjamed’s participation in this event for the past year and a half. In June 2000 she attended a meeting in Barcelona and in April this year she was in Rome for a second meeting dealing not only with Sarajevo 2001 but also with the internal organization of the international association that has been set up to run this biennial exhibition which is held in different cities every time.

Moreover, Flavio Mongelli, a leading figure in the organization of the Biennial, recently discussed the international association and the Sarajevo Biennial itself with members of Inizjamed while he was in Malta. In Sarajevo, Marcelle Teuma will be taking part in similar meetings that are being considered crucial for the running of the recently set up association and for the future of the Biennial.

As part of the preparations for Sarajevo 2001, architect Adrian Mifsud, who is also a member of Inizjamed five-member central coordinating team, took part in an 13-day architecture workshop held in Sarajevo in May to make designs for the Biennial. Adrian Mifsud’s participation in this workshop was made possible thanks to the support of the Italian cultural organization ARCI which has close ties with Inizjamed.

The first time Inizjamed took part in this Biennial for Young European and Mediterranean artists was in Rome 1999 when the Maltese organization was represented by Gozitan artist Austin Camilleri and XXX Theatre Group made up of actors Clare Agius and Ray Calleja. The original theatrical production which was presented in Rome was called “Riħ”. The Maltese group was lead by Adrian Grima, coordinator of Inizjamed, who presented a paper on Maltese culture between Europe and the Mediterranean at the conference held in conjunction with the Biennial.

This year, Teatru Marta Kwitt will be presenting an original production called “Bakki”. This work will be presented in public for the first time every day at 9.00pm between 9 and 15 July at the group’s premises called Action Base in Naxxar.

Savio Deguara studied sculpture in Malta, Perugia and Barcelona. He will be presenting an installation inspired by the theme of chaos and communication and by Sarajevo’s recent history.

Karsten Xuereb, who coordinated work on Inizjamed’s production Kitbiet mill-Mediterran (Writings from the Mediterranean) that was presented at the University of Malta in August 2000 and who produced a 30-minute documentary on poet Marjanu Vella and the gull within Inizjamed’s “Sħaba Gawwi” (A Cloud of Gulls) project, will present a piece of prose called “Between toes and heels: a short tale about (the need for) chaos in communication”.

On their return from Sarajevo, Marcelle Teuma and Karsten Xuereb will be taking part in another major initiative that is being coordinated by Inizjamed in collaboration with the British Council: the week-long visit of accomplished young Scottish writer, Kevin MacNeil, who will be in Malta to lead a series of workshops, and to take part in a literary performance at the University and a public discussion on identity at the Bay Street Theatre.
